Frequently Asked Questions

Toggle switches are probably the most common type of switches. They work by simply pushing them up or downwards. Although toggle switches can come in a variety of materials and colors, we suggest purchasing our timeless and versatile brass toggle switches. And why wouldn't we? Our toggle switches are made to last and add a touch of elegance to your home.

Let's see how you can incorporate them into your home's design and make your space even more inviting.

But first, let's see the different types of toggle switches you can buy here at Residence Supply.

Single toggle switches

Single toggle switches can be used if you want to light up a single light. Whether that is a pendant, a chandelier, or even recessed can lights, it doesn't matter. You just flip the switch up and the lights are on!

Single toggle switches are best used in the entrance of a room such as the bathroom, bedroom, or kitchen.

Double toggle switches

Double toggle switches are the exact same as single toggle switches, only they light up two different types of lights.

These are best used in living rooms, where you might have two ambient light sources, such as a chandelier and cove lights.

LED toggle switches

Toggle switches are not dependent on the bulb - that means that they can work with any bulb, whether it is incandescent, fluorescent, or LED. That's why LED toggle switches are the same as simple toggle switches. Our toggle switches work with every type of bulb, so you can rest assured when you make your purchase.

Single-pole toggle switches

Single-pole toggle switches are the most common type of toggle switches out there. Our collection also consists of single-pole toggle switches. These simply turn the current on or off, so they are best used for lights and electrical appliances that don't use high current.

How to install a toggle switch

Installing a toggle switch involves some basic electrical work. Below are the general steps to install a single-pole toggle switch. Always ensure that you follow safety precautions when working with electricity.

Tools and materials needed:

  • Toggle switch
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire stripper/cutter
  • Voltage tester
  • Electrical tape
  • Wire nuts
  • Safety gloves and goggles

1. Turn off power

  • Turn off the power to the circuit you'll be working on at the main circuit breaker panel
  • Use a voltage tester to ensure that the power is off by testing the wires in the electrical box where you will be installing the switch

2. Remove the old switch

  • Unscrew and remove the cover plate from the existing switch
  • Remove the screws holding the switch in place
  • Carefully pull the switch out from the wall box and disconnect the wires attached to it

3. Prepare the wires

  • Use a wire stripper to strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires if they are not already stripped
  • Ensure that the wires are in good condition, with no fraying or damage. Cut and strip new ends if necessary

4. Connect the toggle switch

  • A standard single-pole toggle switch will have three terminals: one for the ground wire (green screw), one for the hot wire (brass or black screw), and one for the load wire (another brass or black screw)
  • Attach the bare or green ground wire to the green screw on the switch
  • Attach the black (or red) hot wire to one of the brass screws on the switch
  • Attach the other black (or red) wire to the remaining brass screw. This wire goes to the light fixture

5. Secure the switch

  • Ensure all wire connections are secure by tightening the screws
  • Carefully fold the wires back into the electrical box and position the switch
  • Use screws to attach the switch to the electrical box

6. Attach cover plate

  • Position the cover plate over the switch
  • Secure the cover plate with screws

7. Turn on power and test

  • Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker
  • If you're unsure or uncomfortable with any part of the process, consider hiring a licensed electrician
